Suicide bomb in mosque

Suicide bomber has attacked a mosque located in the police complex in Cirebon city. The bomb exploded yesterday on Friday, April 15, 2011 at around 12:20, resulted in 1 person died (suspected as the perpetrator) and 26 people injured. Most of the victims were police because the mosque is a facility within the police complex.

According to the news in Indonesia, the perpetrator were identified aged between 20-25 years, 170 cm tall, oval-faces and short-haired, worn a jacket, a hat, and brought a prayer rug.

Actually this is not the first time for the bomb attack on the mosque. Previously it had occurred at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on April 19, 1999. Nevertheless usually observers in Indonesia, even international, tend to associate the bomb cases to extremists. But I guess a bomb attack in the mosque for this time probably will triggers various discourse and assumption. It's clear that the target location of bomb attacks at this time was in the mosque and police station.

  1. Hi Tikno,

I have been following the news on TVs about this suicide bombing, and some terrorists observers have various theories :

    1) the bomber wanted to revenge against the
Police institution that have been very
    successful in eliminating terrorists here.
    or
    2) the bomber was angry at the trial of Abubakar
    Ba'asyir. But Ba'asyir's organization MMI
    denied this allegation.
    or
    3) it the work of an institution that is not
happy with the Police position as the top
    security agency in the country.

Others said that this bombing show the importance to issue the intelligence law which is still being discussed by the DPR.

One thing for sure is this bombing makes me question about the effectiveness and efficiency of our intelligence network. Especially that until now the Police still cannot identify those responsible for the spread of book bombs that exploded 1 month earlier in Jakarta.

PS: The bomb in Istiqlal Mosque was not by suicide bomber, but was placed there.

  2. Another possibility may be the man was another, socially isolated guy angry with God, the world, mankind and himself.

The phenomenon of these kind of loners, suicidal individuals, who want to take as many with him, is known from killings in US, Germany, Finland and Alphen, the Netherlands (Last week a young men at random killed seven people in a shopping centre and next committed suicide in one of the shops). Maybe this man in Cirebon had similar mental problems.

  3. Terrorism is now spread allover the world so no one can immediately stop but decrease their activities through punishment and negotiations Indonesian government should act strongly on the terrorism.

  4. Maybe we 'needed' this action. why? so that the police acts more quickly in eradicating terrorists now that it struck their own. That being said, I'm not condoning the action of any suicide bomber at all. But unless it's close to home, people tends to be more relax.

  5. @ Multibrand,
Thanks to extend this post. Yeah a lot of presumptions growing now. According to you, which presumptions are closer?

Here are a few interesting opinions that I quoted from Antara News:
    1) Islamic Students Association Alumni Corps (KAHMI) asked the government to immediately reform the intelligence to be able to work better, effective in warding off terrorism.

    2) Rector of Bandung Institute of Technology, Prof. Dr. Akhmaloka Ph.D. said the character education may anticipate the development of terrorism tenet in the younger generation. He also said terrorists actually because of dissatisfaction which it resulting frustration, suicide. Moreover suicide bomb did not fit the standpoint of any religions or beliefs.

    3) Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Said Aqil Siradj said this is the proof of our intelligence weaknesses. What is more apprehensive is this happened in Cirebon City which is famous as the city of religious leader.

  6. @ Colson,
Perhaps the presumption of mental illness is the most neutral views from Colson. But temporarily and personally I would agree with you as long as the evidence is still vague.

    @ Prasad,
WHAT...? decrease their activities through punishment and negotiations?

Suicide bombers are even not afraid to punishment because they're really sure will not be punished by judge after death.

As for negotiations... can you tell us of what kind of negotiations that can decrease their activities?

    I'm confused! maybe others too.

    @ Triesti,
Wow ... you seem to satirize the police.
In the case of dancing cop Norman Kamaru, many also being said, police also ordinary human who need relax to release the tension. ;)

On another note, I read an article that list lanaguages that will be extinct VERY soon : the guardian.co.uk/April 13, 2011. It lists the LENGILU of KALIMANTAN, Indoesia as one of many. You have such great reach to your neighbors, I thought you should know.

  9. Tikno, you know my views on this matter very well. Fundamentalists will not stop at any thing to drive their ideology home to moderates. My condolences to the families of the killed policemen and best wishes to all Indonesians to come out of this danger at the earliest.

  10. Rummuser, I know you will recommend "do anything to eradicate them even must be sentenced to death". Well, a reasonable recommendation!

But I still doubt whether it would end it all. No warranty because suicide bombers are not afraid to die. For me, the most effective way is to provide the true understanding of religious teaching to the younger generation. This is a tough task for parents, religious teachers, schools, and government.

In addition, it seems brutal murder is the pattern in developed countries, not because of religion but tend due to the factors of severe stress or mental sickness.

  11. Those suicide bombers, regardless of their motives, are mentally disturbed. This one is no exception. They hate things and people around them with no clear reasons. The religious sentiments are good fuels to satisfy their tormented brains. Pathetic!

  12. Yari NK,
Widespread publicity in the media for their actions indirectly satisfying their tormented brain. Do you also think like that?

Dam burst tragedy and three important notes

On Friday, March 27, 2009, Situ Gintung dam at Cirendeu, Tangerang, southeast of Jakarta, has broken-down and the water flooded like a small tsunami, washing away cars, houses and settlement area. Ninety nine people were killed and 102 others were missing (update the number of victims from www.kompas.com on Tuesday, March 31, 2009). My condolence for victims and their family. From all of that, there are three important notes that I want to share through this blog. First , it is indeed the embankment that broken-down was caused by excessive debit of water. Situ Gintung levee was originally built under Dutch colonial authorities era, only able to accommodate 1 million cubic of water, while the debit of water before the incident has reached 2 million cubic of water debit. There should be early warning for residents who live around the embankment when felt there was something that threatens the safety of citizens. In Situ Gintung actually already there, but not work well. Second , allotm...

STOP the hatred war in the social networking site

Lately, I feel very worried by unscrupulous users of Facebook who already out of the spirit of Facebook motto namely "Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life". Some of Facebook users who use this site only for uploading pornographic images and shared it using private setting to certain people (not shared to everyone) and the other using it for spreading the hatred feelings, like a Facebook Group calling for Obama's death . Although a very controversial Pages on Facebook namely " Everybody Draw Mohammed Day " which it created by Seattle cartoonist Molly Norris has been closed by Facebook after receiving protests from various parties including protests from the Indonesian government , the most recent controversy is the two opposing group on Facebook who mocked each other namely: "Everybody Draw Mohammed day (Indonesian version)" and the other one is "Everybody Draw Jesus day (Indonesian version)" . As I observed on i...

Artificial intelligence ChatBot.

The world is enthusiastic about the so-called ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) developed by an artificial intelligence research laboratory called OpenAI. Google also did not want to be left behind by developing their own version called Google Bard. Both are powered by artificial intelligence technology. There is a lot of news about this technology, which I think, at least for now, is over-reactive. Like the assumption that artificial intelligence technology will exceed human intelligence (its creator), and moreover, replace humans themselves. On the other hand, Elon Musk warned that this technology could cause a "catastrophic outcome" for humanity if not controlled. He even called a temporary halt to its further development. Considering he was one of the main donors to this project, I found it odd. I don't know if this is a marketing trick to blow up investors' interest. After all, ChatGPT, Google Bard, or artificial intelligence is just a computer pr...
